The Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (SSAG) apply the same formulas across Canada. In Alberta, your provincial tax rate affects your Net Disposable Income (NDI), which shifts the dollar amount of your support range. The formulas themselves do not change by province.
For separations without dependent children, the SSAG suggests 1.5% to 2% of the income difference for each year of cohabitation, with duration ranging from 0.5 to 1 year per year of the relationship. The Rule of 65 may make support indefinite if the recipient's age plus years of cohabitation equals 65 or more.
For separations with dependent children, spousal support is calculated alongside child support. The SSAG uses Individual Net Disposable Income (INDI), which accounts for Alberta's provincial tax rates, child support transfers, and government benefits like the Canada Child Benefit. The guideline range is 40% to 46% of the combined INDI to the lower-income spouse.
