How child support works in Quebec

Quebec uses its own child support model, separate from the federal model used in most other Canadian provinces and territories. Quebec's model is set out in the Regulation respecting the determination of child support payments, and it takes a fundamentally different approach to calculating support.

The Basic Parental Contribution (BPC) is determined from a table based on both parents' combined disposable income — that is, gross income minus a basic deduction and professional dues. Each parent's share of child support is proportional to their share of the combined disposable income. This means both parents' financial situations are considered from the start.

The model accounts for custody arrangements and three categories of additional expenses: child care, post-secondary education, and special needs. The BPC table covers combined disposable income up to $200,000, with extrapolation for higher incomes.
